Approximately 500 young Manitobans will compete in over 40 Olympic-style hands-on contests at the secondary and post secondary/apprentice level. You’ll see a showcase of skills in robotics and manufacturing, 3D character computer animation, construction trades, hairstyling, and many others.

Winners of many of the competitions will advance to the Skills Canada National Competition in Moncton, New Brunswick from June 5 – 8, 2016.

Hosted by Skills Canada Manitoba, this event is designed to provide much needed awareness of Canada’s skilled workforce shortage. Maria Pacella, Executive Director of Skills Canada Manitoba, says most people are unaware of the merits of post-secondary training in trades and technology. Notes Pacella, “The skilled trades offer opportunities for positions with great pay, job security and flexibility. There is a continuing significant worker shortage in many of these areas.”

Manitoba is proud to be hosting the Skills Canada National Competition in 2017. The event is scheduled to take place from May 31 to June 3, 2017, at the RBC Convention Centre in downtown Winnipeg. The Skills Canada National Competition is the largest national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country.

“Skills Manitoba is thrilled to see the 2017 Skills Canada National Competition coming to Winnipeg,” said Maria Pacella, Executive Director, Skills Canada Manitoba. “The event will provide tremendous opportunities for students from across the province of Manitoba to develop a stronger appreciation for the importance of skilled trades and technology careers.”

“Red River College is central to driving Manitoba’s economy and we’re one of Canada’s leading institutes of applied arts, science and technology,” says RRC President & CEO Paul Vogt. “We exist to encourage, ensure and celebrate student excellence and success – just one of many reasons for our long-term partnership with Skills Canada Manitoba, and we also look forward to partnering with them in 2017 to support the National Skills Competition. To all students, coaches, supporters and volunteers – have a fabulous day!”

The 2017 event will welcome more 1800 delegates from throughout Canada including more than 550 students from each province and territory. These students will participate in more than 45 trade and technology skill areas including Steamfitter/Pipefitter, Cooking, Aircraft Maintenance, Hairstyling, Electrical and IT Network. Students will test their skills against exacting standards that have been developed by technical experts from industry and education.
